Empowering the Next Generation: Financial Literacy at Indian Trails Middle School
On November 14, I had the opportunity to step out of City Hall and into the classroom at Indian Trails Middle School as part of their annual Teach-In Program. Instead of discussing ordinances and infrastructure, I focused on a different kind of foundation: financial literacy for students.
It was such a rewarding experience to share real-world money management skills with our middle schoolers. We talked about budgeting, saving, and even how to write a check — practical tools many of us had to learn the hard way.
What We Covered:
✅ Debit vs. Credit Cards
Understanding the difference between spending your own money and borrowing someone else’s, and the long-term impact of interest and credit scores.
✅ How to Write and Balance a Checkbook
Even in the digital age, learning how to manage and track spending is still a foundational skill.
✅ Budgeting and Planning
We discussed how to budget for essentials, entertainment, and savings. Students were surprised to learn how fast small purchases can add up.
✅ Savings vs. Retirement Accounts
We broke down the importance of saving early not just for short-term goals, but for long-term security. I shared the 4% retirement rule and asked students, “How long do you want to work?”
✅ Rainy Day Fund
We talked about those unexpected expenses — from car repairs to vet bills — and how a simple savings cushion can prevent financial stress later on.
✅ Investing in Yourself First
Before paying bills or splurging on wants, pay your future self. Whether it’s through a savings account or education, prioritizing yourself sets the tone for lifelong success.
Financial literacy is freedom, confidence, and future planning. The earlier students understand the basics, the better prepared they’ll be to navigate the adult world.
Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or community member, I encourage you to start these conversations early and often. Every student deserves the tools to build a stable and successful future.
I’m grateful to Indian Trails Middle School for the invitation and the warm welcome. The energy, curiosity, and questions from these students left me hopeful — they’re ready to learn, lead, and save!
