During my first small but mighty coffee talk, here are some of the notes from our conversations today. These are the issues shared with me today as well as the issues I have heard while waking the community and listening to your emails, phone calls, texts and of course social media responses.
What issues are concerning the residents of Winter Springs most? According to the feedback we have been receiving from residents, it is very clear.
1. Development. It is clear the residents want limited development, and the majority don’t support changes to our existing land use plans to accommodate a large box chain retailer like Walmart.
2. Future Growth and Traffic. Surprising to us, this issue has been shared more with us than water quality. However, this points to a growing concern among residents that Winter Springs will soon be another Oviedo as it relates to traffic. How are developers getting away with increasing traffic, while the city is left without any options to stop it? Why haven’t we been planning for the growth of our city? Why isn’t our water system (waste and drinking water) in a better position to accommodate the fast population growth and demand we are experiencing and expected to continue to experience?
3. Water Quality. Residents from all parts of the city have complained to us about their water quality. Whether it was the smell, the taste, or perhaps like me they have some black sludge coming from their faucets. I have heard stories of family illness and dogs dying. We must get to the bottom of this.
4. Families. The city and our Commission are represented by mostly men whose kids have left the home or they are bachelors. Aside from Tiana Hale, our current city representation leaves a gap between who the city represents and the growing number of small families in our community.
