Community Input on Slavia Road Extension Highlights Importance of Responsible Planning

Slavia Road Extension: Residents Urge Caution and Thoughtful Planning

As the conversation continues around the proposed Slavia Road Extension through the Duda Sod Farm in Seminole County, I want to ensure that residents of Winter Springs are informed and have access to the materials and perspectives shaping this important infrastructure decision.

Earlier this month, a public meeting was held where concerns were raised about potential flooding and environmental impacts stemming from the proposed route. While this extension is being managed by Seminole County—not the City of Winter Springs—it directly affects nearby neighborhoods and downstream water systems that matter to all of us.

Why Residents Are Concerned

Longtime residents who have lived along Bear Creek and in neighborhoods like Chelsea Woods shared firsthand experiences of flooding during Hurricane Ian and prior storms. As one former Winter Springs homeowner noted:

“There were white caps on the sod farm after Hurricane Ian… If they mess this up, they can flood my new house but there’s a good chance that this all goes downstream.”

Bear Creek, which runs adjacent to many Winter Springs neighborhoods, is connected through a system of canals, wetlands, and runoff paths that could be affected if development and road construction aren’t handled with great care.

Review the Project Documents

To provide transparency, I’ve included the materials shared at the public meeting:

These documents outline the scope, proposed alignment, and environmental considerations of the extension.

Moving Forward with Care

As your Winter Springs City Commissioner, I believe it’s essential that infrastructure projects of this scale are approached with diligence, transparency, and a commitment to long-term impact.

That means:

  • Carefully studying water flow and storm impacts
  • Coordinating with environmental agencies and regional partners
  • Ensuring public feedback is thoughtfully considered throughout the process

Whether it’s roads, development, or flood mitigation, the goal is always to protect the health of our natural systems and the safety of our residents. Responsible planning today prevents problems tomorrow.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have concerns, questions, or want to stay informed as this project progresses.
